What is FFA? Basically FFA is a student organization that goes along with Agriculture class.
The National FFA Organization is the largest youth organization in the county with over 610,000 members nationwide! This isn’t the same FFA from 30 or 40 years ago. We like to say it’s not just cows, sows and plows anymore; the modern FFA is about job seekers, beakers and speakers. RMS-CES FFA members will serve the community, improve public speaking, compete in career development events and make great memories while living out the FFA motto: Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.
How do I join? There is a membership form in the front office please fill it out and turn in with your $30 payment (cash or check made out to Rockford Middle School) by September 25th to receive a free RMS FFA chapter T-shirt.
Will I still be a member even when I am in Ag class? Rockford Middle School students have the unique opportunity to take an Agriculture class for quarter each year of Middle School. You are considered a member of FFA for the entire year and there will be meetings and activities all year for you to participate in!
What will we do in FFA? You will have the chance to do community service, fun social activities, study for career development contests and more. You can also look at www.ffa.org to see what the National FFA Organization looks like. This year's FFA members will help to decide what activities and project we complete.
Events currently planned include:
• 1st annual Rockford FFA 5k on September 27th
• New Member Game Night for all members in October
• The 2nd annual Great Rockford Middle Milk drive in Feb (raise money to purchase milk for our community)
• opportunity to join the following Career Development Teams: Poultry Judging, Horse Judging (This is very soon so let Mrs. Sidle know ASAP that you are interested), Dairy Foods, Nursery/Landscape, Floriculture, Meats Judging, Food Science and/or Fish and Wildlife.
• selling concessions for Rockford Athletic Events on 9/14 JV FB 4pm, 9/21JV FB 4pm, 10/1 girls soccer 4:40, 10/5 JV FB 4:15
• other community service projects
• practice public speaking through speaking contests and the chance to be asked to recite the pledge for RMS
• learn parliamentary procedure
• Agriscience Fair Contest in March (complete a science experiment related to agriculture and present)
• State Convention attendance in April for 8th graders whose CDE teams qualify or agri-science fair participants (7th and 8th grade)
When can parents find out more about FFA and Agriculture class? I will have a table setup at the STEM showcase (and we will be selling dinners and concessions!) so please stop by- I would love to meet you and chat about the opportunities in FFA.
Can I be in FFA in high school? YES!!! Mr. Smith is the Ag teacher and FFA advisor at Rockford High School. Sign up for an Ag class at the RHS! FFA offers over 2 million in scholarships to high school seniors and is a great extra curricular activity for college applications!
1st Middle School only FFA chapter in Minnesota
It is an exciting time in the Agricultural Education Program here! All students at RMS-CES will take an Agriscience class this year and 7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to join the FFA chapter. FFA is an inter-curricular student organization and it enhances student’s experience in an Agricultural Education Program by building on what has been taught in the classroom. Typically, in the state of Minnesota, FFA has been geared to high school students. We are thrilled to announce that here at RMS-CES 7th and 8th grade students will have their own chapter for the 2nd year to develop their leadership skills and discover a passion for agriculture before moving on to Rockford High School's FFA chapter.
This all sounds so great for my student, is there anyway that I can help and volunteer my time?
I am so glad you asked! (haha) I am especially in need of help from those with "large" scale cooking/barbecuing skills, a desire to coach/teach a group of FFA members more in depth about particular Career Development Event topics, expert parliamentary procedure folks and various errands runners for big events. :) Please email me [email protected] for more information on how you can get involved!

The National FFA Organization
The National FFA Organization was organized as the "Future Farmers of America" in 1928 in Kansas City, Mo. In 1988, the official organization name was changed to The National FFA Organization to reflect the broadening field of agriculture, which today encompasses more than 300 careers in everything from agriscience to biotechnology to turf grass management. Agriculture includes, but goes beyond, traditional farming.
FFA operates on local, state and national levels. Student members belong to chapters organized at the local school level. Agricultural education instructors serve as chapter advisors. Chapters are organized under state associations headed by an advisor and executive secretary, often employees of the state department of education. States conduct programs and host annual conventions.
The FFA programs and activities help members develop public speaking skills, conduct and participate in meetings, manage financial matters, strengthen problem-solving abilities and assume civic responsibility. Degrees earned at local, state and national levels recognize members' increasing accomplishments. Competitive events and awards programs in areas such as public speaking, commodity marketing and agriscience recognize students' achievements, encourage them to excel beyond the classroom and develop career skills. Community service programs help students contribute to society.
